Critiquing the Critiques

Once upon a time, Sheri was a weirdo and desperately decided she wanted an emote that could express that for her.

Lo and behold, the almighty Karlos allowed my dream to come true, as long as it was done well enough.  So I embarked on a quest to draw three more emotes for a strip to get uploaded.  It was a fairly short quest.  Only took like six hours.  No dragon slaying.  No musical montages.  Voila!

Phase one was complete.  It was time to enter the second, much more treacherous, stage.  I think you all know what I'm talking about - getting it accepted and fixing mistakes.  The lizard emote joke was well-known in the Alpha Legend Skype chat, so I privately approached two staff artists who were members of the pack to ask for critique on the other three emotes.  I made a few changes, as per request, and thought I was good to go.  But Karlos requested that I get votes from non-Alpha Legend members.  I get that, wanna make sure there's no bias because of the joke emote.  I'd like to imagine staff members wouldn't allow themselves to become biased anyhow, but better safe than sorry. ): Unfortunately, this meant posting the emote strip in the...
.......... the... A/R thread.

duuunnnn
Okay, I might be over exaggerating the situation.  But you can't tell me you don't dread posting there in at least some sense.  This blog isn't going to be super original.  The A/R thread has had problems since the beginning of its existence, however necessary it may be.  It goes through ups and downs.  Things were up for a while after A/R Helpers (aka "A/R Helpders" as deemed by Jek) were introduced to speed up the flow of the thread.  Even though they didn't get an official vote, it still helped with the extreme wait members were facing for critique on their custom work.  But now the speed of assistance has begun to decline once more, although we're nowhere near the rock bottom from before.

First of all, I'd like to give a huge thank you to Zettobi.  You are working your butt off on that thread, and I for one, greatly appreciate it.  Yes, there are other staff members posting here and there, but you are taking on a bulk of the work right now.  Props to you.  It would be really nice to see other staff artists have the same initiative as you.  Encouraging staff members to post in that thread has always been a struggle, so I'm not meaning to call out any individuals negatively.  But members really have to go out of their way to get staff to comment on their custom work.  That's why I wanted to message people directly about my emote strip, rather than post in the A/R thread.  Nowadays, I see members post the same custom multiple times to try to get that second yes vote.  On June 8th, I posted a set of 13 emotes for critique.  Zett got back to me in a timely manner, I fixed a few things, and posted again with the changes.  I never got another staff response on that, despite having four staff members post in there since then.  Finally, I just gave up and colored/shaded, hoping for the best, and posted the final version after over a month of waiting on the lines.  Making changes is a bigger pain in the butt when you have more than lines, so I would rather have had a more definite answer before.  Sure, I could have kept spamming it till I got a response, but I shouldn't have to.  Whenever other staff members do pop in to help, they usually just comment on the ones since the last time a staff member posted.  They don't go back and give a second vote on any of the ones that have one yes. :/ A lot of times, staff will post to have their own artwork critiqued, and yet they hardly take the time to comment for the sake of others.  It's a little disheartening if you're like me.  I like to finish projects quickly... not waiting weeks between each step.

--------------------------------------------------
Edit: I'd like to amend this blog post to say that I am not trying to target individuals.  I know that everyone has their own personal problems to deal with, and a website is not necessarily a priority.  Any staff member that tries to help out is appreciated by me.  I've been there, done that, and I understand the struggle, if even on a lesser level than faced by some staff members.  In the effort of trying to describe a specific circumstance, it appears I have inadvertently upset people.  I have removed the names of the four staff members, even though they can be seen by looking through the thread.  I mentioned them to try to give a little credit to others that were posting besides Zett, but my connotation was taken negatively.  I will always encourage readers to privately message me if I offend you, so I can make it right.  I will also make an effort not to use customs/etc. as examples in a potentially controversial situation without asking the owner first for future blog postings.
--------------------------------------------------

Customs are already tedious to make.  They don't need to be any worse by this slowed down process, when having two yes votes is a necessity.  But the lack of staff response isn't the only issue.  When so few people are giving advice, inconsistencies slip through the system.

--------------------------------------------------
Edit: Sorry guys, example removed.  I had some specific stuff typed out and comparison images, but per request, I have taken it down.  I don't like talking about things without giving specific examples so I do apologize for the lack of one this time around.  I'm not really in the mood to go find another at this time.
--------------------------------------------------

Instead of rambling on anymore about the downsides of the A/R thread, I'll end on a positive note.  Perhaps when staff come up with a better way to encourage their own participation, these issues will be mitigated.  Until then, we can all appreciate the benefits of having a mostly functional approval system for customs.  No more shall poor wolves suffer the effects of being reanimated roadkill.

On a side note, if you know the owner of this account, send them my way.  I'd love to buy it and replace that eyesore.

A wild Zim appears!

Oh, look at this. I have been convinced to do a thing.
I swear there were no bribes of coffee involved in bringing me here.
I am supposed to say... that I am here entirely of my own free will... or something along those lines.

I am fairly certain most of you know me, or know of me, or have seen me around wolf-haven at least. I have never written anything for a blog before and make no promises that I will have much to say that holds any value. It could be interesting if you are waiting for someone to possibly go off on a tangent that seems strange, sort of uncomfortable, perhaps funny, and maybe impossible to understand. Now and then I might even come up with something insightful. I do have my moments.

Today I will try not to get side tracked by my inner voices. This is really just meant as an introduction. I can be an opinionated 'old' grump, but I think I can put that to use here. I love coffee. I am a semi-functional working adult... that is still a total slacker the rest of the time. I have had a love of writing since before I could write, and would dictate stories to my older sister for her to write down. I read nonstop. I have a cat and a horse, I work at a horse farm that has many other animals. I used to run a pet rat rescue and I have worked at animal hospitals. My favorite animal is a rhinoceros. My favorite colors are green and purple. I love tattoos and piercings. I plan to take over the worl.... I mean. What?

Most likely none of this matters in the least to any of you, I will be slightly shocked if anyone even paid attention... but it was a nice way to get my feet wet, so to speak. After this I can at least say, 'I have posted on a blog'. For today, that is enough. That'll do Zim, that'll do.

Disturbing the Peace

Zimrah is with us now.  We know how to handle her.

Staff Applications

Every time applications for new moderators open, the process is always a little different.  This is expected as a site matures.  I'm actually quite happy with the newest form; the interactive part is an innovative idea.  So props to the staff for integrating that portion.  If I were to recommend anything though, it would be for the answers to be sent in via Google Forms rather than a message to a staff side account.  Not sure if any of you have used that, but it's pretty nifty tool, and a lot more organized.  Might save a little copy/pasting time.

One part of the application that particularly annoys me, however...
"Side Accounts: Your other accounts including inactive ones"
Do you know how many side accounts some people have? It can be a serious addiction, haha.  I know people who don't even know all their accounts.  It just seems very impractical to ask this.  I understand the purpose - to check warning/ban history for applicants across the table.  But it would have been a better idea to ask for every email they have used on site.  That, along with tracking by IP, should be enough.  Perhaps an account might be missed, but more will likely be missed by someone trying to name them all.  This might not be a problem for many people, but for some... well, if I was considering applying, I would have hesitated at that because it would take so long to figure out.  I'd probably have to ask a staff member tell me all my accounts anyhow... which is a little counterproductive from a time management standpoint.

But I don't want to be too picky about that thread.  The staff are doing a good job of being thorough. :3 What I will express is my opinion on the candidates.  Maybe it's just me, but it seems like there was a lot less serious interest in the applications this time around than in the past.  The news says, "We received a whopping 38!" But I'm not quite sure how whopping that is.  A lot of the applicants just seem like newer members that don't really know what they're doing and want to be staff because they think it's cool.  Once you discredit those, judging by just the members that posted on the thread, I can see maybe 15 real applicants.  And even some of those... meh.  In the past, maybe the number of applications itself wasn't higher, but the quality was there.  I remember us rejecting some people that would have been perfectly fine, and I don't see those users reapplying this time.

Honestly, I'm gonna be overcritical of who is chosen because I still see Wolf Haven as mah little baby.  Not trying to be harsh on people that don't deserve it.  The site definitely could use the help, so anyone that wants to volunteer their time should be appreciated.  But I have been very dissatisfied with a staff member that was selected in the past, and should that person's friend get chosen... well, I'll try to keep the blog tame.  Some people are not fit to be staff based on their past actions, but they have no bad reputation marks on their accounts because of certain circumstances.  Being vague right now because I'm giving the staff team the benefit of the doubt in their ability to remember things that happened in the past. *crosses fingers for no goldfish brains* But I have a bad feeling in my gut. ):

Onto a new subject...

Is anyone else sick of seeing MidnightHowl on the Top 10 Packs? It's been there forever, and only because Blaze-Moon, a BANNED member, has a ton of XP holding it up.  Back when that initially happened, SunsetGuardian was removed from Blue-Moon and Coren_Venom from Swift-Night, if I remember correctly.  Why was Blaze-Moon never removed? I've been trying to ignore it for a long time, but it's annoying as all hell because its pack banner has been broken for ages.

But that begs another question.  Why are banners not automatically resized if they're too big? I know Karlos probably has more important things to work on, but I don't imagine that would take very long to implement.  Here and there, improperly-sized banners have been cropping up.  For example, Empire's banner is 435 x 75 pixels rather than 400 x 75, which is the proper size.

*compensating for something*

Well, I'll bring this entry to a close for now.  I have some other things I plan to talk about.  I also have a whole list of things that would be great to discuss, but I'm not sure if I will... out of respect for certain people.  But I do have a question for you all! Would you be interested in seeing reviews of packs? Or maybe pack showdown entries? Pack alphas could volunteer to have their pack face off against another, where I critique the pros and cons of each.  Not sure if anybody would be interested in something like this.  I could also start an unofficial "Top 10 Packs" list, where packs are ranked based on community, art, roleplays, etc. rather than just level.  Win a pack showdown, move up on the list..? I could join the packs on a side account to check them out if I don't already have experience with them.  Then I could put up a poll for everyone to vote after reading.  Please comment and let me know what you think.

Shout outs!

Both Spirithowl1 and Zimrah messaged me about the blog... while I was in the middle of typing this.  So snaps for these psychic freaks. <3

Also a shout out to Jekyll.  One day you will proofread a news journal and get it right on the first try.  I believe in you. *consolation hug*

It's summer, and I have nothing better to do.

So that means I'm going to post on this blog a little.  As many of you know, I retired from staff almost a year ago.  I did enjoy being an administrator, and helping people will always be important to me, but it was just bad timing.  That fall semester, I ended up not sleeping Sunday through Wednesday every week.  Have you ever tried only sleeping three days a week? It's not pretty.  It affected my grades and my mental health, but I had to continue working to afford rent and school in the first place.  I was in unsafe conditions at work too, so that didn't help.  They left a 20-year-old girl working by herself from 10 PM to 6 AM in a gas station... even after someone tried to commit suicide in the store and I pleaded with them to change my shift or give me a partner.  I'm not spewing all of this for pity, but just wanted to give you a quick run down of why I was in no way equipped to help run a website for those months.  I stepped down as soon as I realized I wouldn't have the time or sanity for it.

So now that that's out of the way, I'm going to preface this post by saying that the attitude of the blog may be changing some.  When the blog started, it was during the "blog craze" wherein everyone had drama-related blogs inspires by Stormgaze.  I didn't mind giving my opinions on some stronger subjects, but I would never be rude about it.  Once I became staff, whenever the blog did revive, it was mostly a cool Wolf Haven updates page.  We'd show off newly uploaded customs, chat about neat packs, and so on.  As I am no longer staff and I don't feel the need to uphold standards that may reflect back upon the site, my writing is going to revert to being a little more controversial.  I still consider myself professional, and while there are a lot of things I could talk about, I do know where to draw the line.  Wolf Haven has been a huge part of my life, and I have no intentions of slandering the website.

From the Terms of Service:
2K. Actions off-site may result in on-site punishments if they are linked to Wolf-Haven. This includes actions such as: Advertising on other websites without permission, making slanderous comments in regards to Wolf-Haven or posting content that may damage the reputation of Wolf-Haven.
So before you go and get too excited, I'm not gonna explode into a major asshat. *salutes and says, "Major Asshat"* My apologies for the poorly timed HIMYM joke. ): I do respect the rules of the site.  I don't want to harass anybody.  But there are a lot of things I'd like to discuss in the future of this blog.  Whether or not I name names, I have not decided.  I will not attack anybody.  That is not who I am.  But when the point-blank actions of somebody speak negatively of themselves, that is not my problem.

For right now, I am removing the other blog authors.  Thank you to Sergeant, Hylothe, and Akakios for wanting to participate and help out before when I hired people.  I know many others applied, but grammar is really important to me and this was the team I trusted.  If any of you would like to continue posting on the blog now that I am bringing it back, or if anyone else is interested in becoming a part of it, feel free to contact me.  No requirements, but I'd like you to try to post once a week, even if it's just pretty custom stuff and showcasing new forum threads. :)

I'll end this post here, even though I could probably ramble forever.  Expect to see a new post as soon as tomorrow or the day after.  I might also mess with the layout some.  I like new looks to reflect new vibes, but we'll see how much effort I actually put into this.

DON'T PANIC!

Sorry for the lack of updates.  I really love writing for this blog, but everyone gets busy and I am no excuse.

There isn't much to really report, beside WH being a bit slow.  This is due to sever updates and should hopefully be resolved soon.  Just hang tight.

 MARK YOUR CALENDARS
May 25th is Towel Day!  Not that it really matters, but Towels are cool, so show your support for some random cause you make up and carry a towel around with you on Towel Day.

That's about it, hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Just thought everyone else should fall in love with the SV as I already have.
